Instagram Vs Reality…

Instagram. A wonderful invention for those that love photography and want to dip their toes into social media but without having to write too much.

A way to show off.

A way to show the world things you’re passionate about.

It’s also become a Mecca for photos of normal sh*t being made to look like its beautiful sh*t.

But this is because you almostย have to do it. Before I started blogging, I just used it for posting photos from holidays and days out. Now I use it 2/3 times most days to post allsorts of stuff because as a blogger, “that’s what you have to do”. You have to be seen to be being ‘social’.

As I said, Instagram is wonderful for making the most inane of things, pretty. Many People on there also make out that their lives are perfect, amazing, exciting, flawless even, when actually, I’m pretty certain that what their posting on there and what goes on behind closed doors are two very different things.

So, in order to prove a point, here are my examples…

1) Lunch.

This is what I posted on Instagram…

This is what was actually going on…

(And what I was left to clean up once the family had disembarked from the table)

See what I’m saying??

Another example then.

2) Kids.

This is what I posted to Instagram…

This is what normally goes on…

(Yes, one of them is watching the annoying Kinder Egg opening lady…)

Another example…

3) Baking.

This is what I posted to Instagram…

This is what the rest of the kitchen looked like…

And finally…

4) Me.

This is what I posted to Instagram…

And this is what I normally look like…

…only joking!! Hahaha!! My boobs aren’t quite that hairy, here’s me after a school run in ‘typical’ British Weather…

So there you have it.

The good and the bad, the true and the false, the ideal versus the reality. With the smokescreen removed, it’s not actually all that polished and ‘hunky-dory’ is it….

In defence of Instagram, I quite like escaping to my little online ‘idyll’ – where all the lovely bits of life are (Mostly when the kids are calling each other “wee wee poo poo bogey face” or I’m waiting for the toddler to get to sleep whilst my Gin is downstairs and it takes me away to my ‘happy place’.

You can find me in my pretend life here:

Gemma’s Happy Place…
Do find me on there if you too have a ย ‘happy place’ you escape to…

(before kids, my happy place was called the pub. How things have changed…)

Oh yes, all too true. I have a bit of a similar post about blog photos and how if you zoomed out you’d see a much different picture to the cropped and curated one that gets shared.
You look lovely in both selfies by the way ๐Ÿ™‚

Joining Instagram is on my list of things to do in order to make my blog better! I must join soon! I like the idea of people thinking I live in an amazing surreal, tidy, beautiful world, where underneath is total chaos.
Have a good week! And I just found out that your name is Gemma, so Hi Gemma! Or maybe Instsgram allocates you a wonderful name too? Maybe you are really Doris…….

Do. The post is called Come to my house on any given day. Search for social media and you’ll find it.

This is brilliant and so true! I have to confess that if I’m taking a photo for Instagram, I have a quick tidy of the spot where I’m taking the photo of. So if I post a photo of my kids sitting on the sofa, you can guarantee that out of shot is the pile of laundry that I hastily moved away and a pile of toys that I just kicked across the room to be out of sight. And 5 minutes after the photo, one of them will probably wind the other up and there’ll be tears and tantrums! But it isn’t it fun to pretend we all live in an Instasham-world where the kids are all smiley and houses are always pristine…! ๐Ÿ™‚

I love the Instagram/Reality comparison. I’ve been kicking around an uncensored and unfiltered post idea… At least Instagram Land lets us feel a little better about the insanity, if only briefly.

I’m so addicted to Instagram! I love to scroll through all of the pretty photos – it always makes me feel more positive about things (although you’d think it would do the opposite!). It’s a complete escape for me – my reality looks a lot like yours!

It is escapism isn’t it. Truly a ‘happy place’ – as i am typing this the toddler has run past me and smells of poo. The irony… X

OMG I could not agree with you more. Until 2 months ago I had no idea what Instagram even was and only opened an account to complement and publicise my blog. I have to say that I’m a little bit addicted but I do take all the feeds with a pinch of salt ๐Ÿ˜‰

Great post and really made me laugh!

you are adorable and i love love love this post! i was literally just having a text conversation with a friend of mine who keeps begging me to join IG, and then your email came through with this post. i was laughing so hard! great timing, by the way. and so poignant, your post! we are {sadly} creating a facade of a world, but i love it when people keep it real.
i love what and how you’ve written here, i just love your blog!! ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. March 14, 2016 / 6:26 pm

awww, sweet gemma. thank you for your reply.
we are so similar… your response made me cry a little – ha! it is always touching to connect with people, even if they are very far away. i do wish i had people closer to me in proximity, but that is part of what makes the internet great. i also love the idea of escapism… i suppose that is why i chose to start my blog in the first place… it is the most “ideal” presentation of my life, wrapped up in cool filters and perfect lighting.
ah, indeed it is good to escape… but i also believe we need a healthy balance of real experiences in our daily lives. perhaps one day i will wander into the insta-world… not sure if there is a place for this renaissance soul in social media, but i’ve been known to make impromptu decisions in the past ๐Ÿ˜‰
    annnnnd, i digress.
much love to you, pretty mama.

  11. March 14, 2016 / 8:11 pm

i love it. you are rather convincing, yanno ๐Ÿ˜‰

  12. March 15, 2016 / 1:08 pm

As long as you use IG knowing that people are presenting their best bits and not comparing yourself then it’s a great place to escape to. I find it inspiring. The moment it starts to make you feel not good enough it the moment to stop scrolling. #TwinklyTuesday

You’re so right. I love escaping to my happy place on there – and other people’s. It just made me giggle thinking about the extent of the fussing and planning it takes to take even the most simple of photos, of a cup of tea for instance. I’m guilty of it too, it just amused me.
    Thanks for reading and commenting.x

Reminded me of earlier in the week. My husband came home and said “Wow the house looks tidy”. I told him to look around the corner…. there was the mess and unfolded washing. I had just moved it because I wanted to take some blog photos without a mess in the background!

  15. March 15, 2016 / 2:56 pm

ja! I love this. Instagram truly is that way isn’t it. I wrote a similar article a while back about how my kids were looking through old instagram photos saying oh lets live like that again!! I was very taken aback at how my memory of a time when I would use Instagram as my creative outlet while feeling extremely depressed and “stuck”, had instead given my kids a beautiful memory of art rooms and painting sessions and cardboard houses.
I love instagram I have 5 accounts!!!! I know exactly what you mean……#twinklytuesday

  16. March 20, 2016 / 11:45 pm

Oooh I need to try this Instagram is one I have so far avoided so as not to become totally consumed by social media but it may be time to go over to the dark side!!
